Not saying that kids who are exposed cannot also be gifted, but readiness does not equal being gifted.Ī school/district may claim to have a gifted section/class, but it does not mean the kids have been diagnosed or have tested as "gifted". There are always kids who know nothing coming into K (due to no exposure at home for the past 5 years) who surpass peers who can read and write on day one (due to tons of exposure and academics encouraged at home). At 5, if the kid can read and write, has number sense, and can do basic math, that's advanced.Įxposure is the main factor in school readiness, but not actual IQ. Worry about advanced or gifted classes when she's 8 or 9.Įdited to add - being put in a gifted class as a 5 year old is completely different than actually being identified as gifted. Let her go to Kinder, make friends, and learn how to be a student (this can be very hard for some kids). Kindergarten is 40% academics and 60% social/emotional. Kindergarten students are not labeled as "gifted" unless we are talking about a child prodigy.ĥ years old is way too young to label a child "gifted", academically speaking. She just thinks learning is fun and as a parent I want to persevere her interests and support her to the best of my ability, hence the post to find out what I don’t know. Truthfully I don’t believe my daughter is a genius. A lot of people think the name “gifted class” is not justified and I agree. Update: Wow people seem to feel strongly about this topic. Would you share your understanding/experience of gifted programs? TIA! I looked around online and found very vague standards for gifted programs (we live in FL). When asked about the difference between gifted and normal classes, the person just said "gifted classes have the same curriculum but more in depth". We toured our public school yesterday and we really liked it. She is a highly sensitive child however and takes a little bit time to get used to new environment. Academically she's pretty advanced (of course that part needs to be tested if we are interested in gifted programs). ![]() She has a late birthday and she's exposed to kindergarten level learning materials already. We are looking into different schools and programs and see what's going to fit her needs the best. ![]() Our daughter is turning 5 next week and is currently in a Montessori mixed age class.
